Doncaster Cables EV-Ultra is a UK-made cable range built for electric vehicle charge point installations. The EV-Ultra Cat5e cable combines power conductors and a foil-screened Cat5e data cable in one double-sheathed run, so the installer feeds the charger and gives it a hard-wired data connection with a single cable instead of two.

Can power and data run in the same cable?
In EV-Ultra, yes. BS 7671 Regulation 528.1 generally keeps Band I (data) and Band II (230V power) circuits out of the same wiring system, unless every cable or conductor is insulated for the highest voltage present. EV-Ultra's power and data conductors are rated to the same nominal voltage, which meets that condition, so separate segregation is not required. The data pairs are screened and twisted, and Doncaster recommends terminating the screen to earth.
Why hard-wire a charger's data connection?
A wired connection gives the charge point a data link that does not depend on the strength of a Wi-Fi signal at the charger position, and can also carry an energy monitoring connection. Running it inside the supply cable means one run to route through walls and buildings, for a quicker and neater installation.
Where can EV-Ultra cable be installed?
It is designed for installation in air, clipped to a surface, on cable tray or ladder work and embedded in concrete. It can be laid direct in the ground where suitable mechanical protection is in place. The operating temperature range is -15°C to 90°C.
How is the cable sold?
By the metre. Set the quantity to the number of metres your run needs. Sizing for any job depends on the charger's current, run length, installation method and grouping, and must be confirmed by the installing electrician against BS 7671.
