What does an EV charger cover do?

Two different jobs, depending on the type. A cover cap seals the socket when the charger is idle, keeping rain, grit and insects out of the connector — worth having on any outdoor untethered charger, where the socket faces the weather between sessions. A front cover is the outer panel of the charger itself, so replacing it changes the colour and finish of the unit without touching the electronics behind it.

Can I change the colour of my EV charger?

On chargers designed for it, yes. The Easee front cover comes in five colours at £42 and clips on in place of the existing panel, so a white charger can become black, grey or a colour that suits the wall it is fitted to. Teltonika takes the same approach with four colours plus a Kebony wood finish. Where the charger is not designed for a swappable panel, the finish is fixed at purchase — which is worth knowing before you buy, especially for a charger going on the front of a house.

Are charger covers weatherproof?

The charger itself already is — most are rated IP54 to IP66, which covers UK weather comfortably — so a cover is not what makes the unit safe outdoors. What a cover cap adds is protection for the socket contacts specifically, which are the part exposed when nothing is plugged in. Over years of outdoor use that keeps the connection cleaner and reduces the grit and moisture that gets into the socket every time it rains.

What else protects an outdoor EV charger?

On a driveway, very little else is needed. On a car park or shared parking area, the real risk is impact rather than weather: a crash barrier from £155 in front of the unit takes the hit from a mis-judged reverse instead of your charger.
