What is EV load management?
A 7kW charger draws 32A continuously for hours — a substantial share of a typical 60A to 100A domestic supply. Add a shower, an oven and an immersion heater at the same time and the main fuse is at risk. Load management puts a measuring device on the incoming supply so the charger knows the total draw in real time, and reduces its own current when the rest of the property needs it. Charging simply takes a little longer during those periods rather than the supply being overloaded.
Do I need a load balancer?
Often, yes. Your installer will assess the supply capacity against the existing maximum demand of the property. Where headroom is tight — common in older homes, flats and properties with electric heating or a shower on the same supply — load management is what allows a 7kW charger to be fitted at all, rather than derating it permanently to a slower speed. On commercial sites it is effectively mandatory once you install more than one charger, because the chargers then have to share what capacity exists.
What is an Easee Equalizer?
The Equalizer is Easee's load management device. It reads the total current at the incoming supply and communicates with connected Easee chargers, which adjust their output accordingly. It is also what enables dynamic load sharing between multiple Easee units on one site, so a car park can add chargers without each one needing its own dedicated capacity. Which Equalizer do I need?
Match it to the supply. A standard UK home is single phase, so the 100A single phase Equalizer (£160) is the right device for almost all domestic installations. Commercial and industrial premises are usually three phase: the 100A three phase Equalizer (£495) covers most smaller commercial supplies, and the 500A three phase (£690) is for larger sites with substantial incoming capacity. If you are unsure which you have, your installer can confirm it from the incoming supply and main fuse rating before you order.
Can load management save money as well as protect the supply?
Indirectly, and the saving can be large. The alternative to load management is often a supply upgrade from the distribution network operator, which can run into thousands of pounds and take months. A device that lets you install within your existing capacity avoids that entirely. On multi-charger commercial sites the same logic applies at greater scale — load sharing typically allows meaningfully more charge points than the raw headroom would support, deferring or removing the need for reinforcement.
Is load management the same as an energy monitoring sensor?
They overlap but are not identical. A load management device actively controls the charger's output. An energy monitoring sensor such as the MyEnergi Harvi (£85) measures consumption and generation and feeds that data to the charger — typically to enable solar diversion without hardwired CT clamps — rather than existing primarily to protect the supply. Many chargers use one, the other, or both, and several brands now build the load management function into the charger itself. Check the charger specification before buying separately.
