RFIDs

EV charger RFID cards and fobs control who can start a charging session. The driver taps the card on the charger, the unit checks it against the authorised list and releases the charge — and logs who used it and how much energy they took. We stock 3 RFID products from £4: Easee RFID keys (£4) and Rolec RFID cards and fobs (£13.50 each), all sold individually. Free UK delivery.

What does an RFID card do on an EV charger?

It authorises the session. Without it, any charger not behind a locked gate can be used by anyone who parks in front of it. Tapping an RFID card or fob identifies the user to the charger, which then starts the charge and records the session against that user — so you get both access control and a usage record. That record is what makes staff reimbursement, tenant recharging and fleet cost allocation possible without anyone writing down meter readings.

Where do I need RFID access?

Anywhere the charge point is accessible but not public: workplace car parks, residential developments and blocks of flats, shared driveways, fleet depots and visitor bays. It is also worth having at home if the charger is on an unfenced frontage. What RFID does not suit is genuinely public charging, where drivers arrive once and will not have a card — that needs contactless card payment instead. See our commercial payment systems.

Are RFID cards charger-specific?

Largely, yes. Cards are registered to the charger or back office that will read them, so an Easee key works with Easee chargers and Rolec cards with Rolec units. Buy the cards that match your hardware, and buy a few more than you think you need — cards get lost, and issuing a spare is easier than ordering one at short notice. Rolec cards and fobs are sold individually at £13.50 each, so you can order exactly the number of drivers you need; Easee RFID keys are £4.

What is the difference between a card and a fob?

Function is identical — the difference is what people are willing to carry. A card sits in a wallet alongside bank cards, which suits staff and residents who will have it on them anyway. A fob goes on a keyring, which suits drivers who reach for keys before a wallet and works better in gloves or bad weather. Most sites issue whichever their users prefer, and there is no reason not to mix the two across one installation.

Can I use RFID and card payment together?

Yes, and on mixed-use sites it is usually the right answer. RFID handles your known users — staff, residents, fleet — with access control and per-user reporting, while a contactless terminal handles visitors and the public who will never register for anything. Retail sites, hotels and workplaces with visitor bays commonly run both from the same charge points. See our payment terminals for the contactless side.
