What Lewden products are available?
Two dedicated EV consumer units. The PRO65-REV40AS (£92) combines a 40A protective device, a Type A 30mA RCD and a Type 2 surge protection device in a die-cast metal enclosure rated for outdoor use — the choice where the board has to live outside next to the charger. The PRO-REV40BS (£250) uses a 40A Type B RCCB with the same integrated Type 2 SPD in a steel enclosure, for installations where Type B protection is required. Both are sized for dedicated 7.2–7.4kW single-phase EV charging circuits.
What is the difference between a Type A and Type B RCD?
This is the question that decides which unit you need. A Type A RCD detects AC and pulsating DC residual currents. A Type B additionally detects smooth DC residual current, which EV charging can produce. Most modern chargers include 6mA DC protection internally, and where they do, a Type A device upstream is sufficient — which is why the £92 Type A unit covers the majority of installations. Where the charger does not provide that internal DC protection, a Type B RCD is required instead, and the £250 unit is the compliant option. Check the charger's specification before ordering.
Why fit a dedicated EV consumer unit?
An EV charger draws near its rated current continuously for hours, which is unlike anything else on a domestic board. A dedicated unit gives the charging circuit its own correctly rated protection, keeps the charger off shared RCDs where a fault elsewhere would interrupt charging, and avoids replacing an existing consumer unit that is otherwise perfectly serviceable. What does the integrated SPD do?
The Type 2 surge protection device protects the charger and connected equipment from transient overvoltages — short, high-voltage spikes caused by nearby lightning strikes or switching events on the distribution network. EV chargers sit at the end of a long cable run on an external wall and contain sensitive electronics, which makes them more exposed than most household equipment. Having the SPD built into the same enclosure saves fitting a separate device and the board space it would take, and keeps the installation compliant with current requirements for surge protection.
Which Lewden unit should I choose?
Start with the charger specification. If it has 6mA DC protection built in — as most current smart chargers do, including Sevadis, Teltonika, Deta and Easee — the PRO65-REV40AS at £92 is the correct and far cheaper choice, and its die-cast weatherproof enclosure means it can be mounted outdoors beside the charger. Only specify the PRO-REV40BS at £250 where Type B protection is genuinely required by the charger or the installation design.
