Three reasons. Any vehicle can use it, because the driver supplies a cable matched to their own car. There is nothing permanently attached to steal, damage or trip over, which matters in a public or shared car park far more than on a private driveway. And the unit is cheaper to maintain — a damaged tethered cable means a service visit, while a damaged driver's cable is the driver's problem. The trade-off is that a driver arriving without a cable cannot charge.
How much do untethered 22kW chargers cost?

Do drivers need their own cable?
Yes — a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, which most EV owners carry as standard because the majority of public and workplace charge points are untethered. If your site serves visitors who may not have one, either provide a small number of tethered bays alongside, or keep spare cables at reception. We stock Type 2 charging cables from £105, and a 22kW cable also works on 7kW chargers, so it is the more flexible option for anyone buying one.
Are untethered chargers grant eligible?
Yes — 22kW commercial chargers qualify under the Workplace Charging Scheme, worth up to £350 per socket, capped at 40 sockets, for businesses, charities and public sector organisations. The grant covers 75% of the purchase and installation cost up to that cap, and dual socket units count as two sockets — up to £700 on a single unit.
Do I need three-phase power?
Yes. 22kW requires a three-phase supply, which most commercial premises have and most homes do not. Fitted to single phase, a 22kW charger delivers 7.4kW — it works, but you have paid for capacity you cannot use.
