Summary

The Cord Portable EV Charger is a 2.3kW portable EV charger, often called a granny charger, for topping up from an ordinary 230V household socket. It has a 5m cable and a Type 2 connector, so it fits any EV from 2018 onwards.

It is a back-up rather than a main charger. Selectable 6A, 8A and 10A settings let you dial the draw down on older wiring, IP65 and IK10 construction handles British weather, and a carry bag and 3 year warranty are included.

Can I use it with a normal 3-pin plug socket?

Yes. It plugs into a standard UK 230V 3-pin socket and draws a maximum of 10A. Use a dedicated socket in good condition, ideally an outdoor-rated one, and never a multi-way adaptor. If you will charge from the same socket regularly it is worth having an electrician check the circuit first.

How long does a full charge take?

At 2.3kW it adds roughly 2.3kWh an hour, which is about 8 to 10 miles of range per hour for a typical EV. A plug-in hybrid or small battery can be filled overnight, but a 60kWh car would need well over 24 hours from empty. Treat it as a top-up or emergency charger rather than a replacement for a 7kW wall unit.

Is it safe to use every day?

It is built for regular use with IP65 waterproofing, IK10 impact resistance and 6A, 8A and 10A settings so you can reduce the load on older wiring. Even so, a domestic socket is not designed for many hours of continuous load every night, so a dedicated 7kW home charger is the better long-term answer if you drive daily.

Can I plug it into an extension lead?

No. It should go straight into a wall socket. Extension leads, cable reels and multi-way adaptors can overheat under a sustained 10A load and are a common cause of fires with portable chargers. If you need more reach, choose a longer cable version or reposition the car.

Is it weatherproof, and what warranty does it come with?

The unit is IP65 rated against water and IK10 rated against impact and works from -25C to +45C, so it copes with British weather. Keep the 3-pin plug itself dry and out of standing water, as a domestic socket is not weatherproof. It comes with a 3 year warranty and a carry and storage bag.
