Does this unit include surge protection?

No. The G6EV40PME is supplied with a 40A Type A RCBO and PME fault detection only. Where surge protection is wanted in the same enclosure, the GS8EV40PME (IP40) and GCS8EV40PME (IP65) include it.

What does PME fault detection actually do?

On a PME (TN-C-S) supply, a broken combined neutral and earth conductor in the network can raise the voltage on exposed metalwork, including a car plugged in outside. This unit monitors the supply voltage and, if it moves outside the 207V to 253V window for four seconds, disconnects the vehicle from the live conductors and from protective earth. It only recloses once the voltage is back within range.

Does this mean I do not need an earth rod?

BS 7671 Regulation 722.411.4.1 offers open-PEN detection as an alternative to an earth electrode for EV charging on a TN-C-S supply, and this unit provides that detection. Whether an electrode is required for a particular installation is a decision for the electrician designing it.

Can it be mounted outside next to the charger?

No. This unit is IP40, which suits indoor positions such as a garage, utility room or meter cupboard. For an outdoor or damp position, the IP65 GCS8EV40PME is the alternative.

Is a Type A device enough for my charger?

A Type A RCBO detects AC and pulsating DC residual current. Smooth DC residual current is handled by the 6mA DC detection built into most current smart chargers, and where the charger provides that, a Type A device upstream is the appropriate choice. Where the charger does not, a Type B device is required instead.

How much space does it need?

The enclosure measures 235 x 161 x 110mm (H x W x D), which is 36mm narrower than the 8-way GS8EV40PME, making it the choice where board space is tight.
