The GARO GCS8EV40PME is a ready-assembled consumer unit for dedicated electric vehicle charging circuits, supplied in a weatherproof IP65 metal enclosure. It combines a 40A Type A RCBO, PME fault detection and surge protection in an 8-way assembly, so the charging circuit gets its own correctly rated protection in a position where an IP40 board could not be used.

The IP65 rating is what separates this unit from the GS8EV40PME: the electrical specification is the same, but the sealed enclosure allows the unit to be mounted outdoors beside the charger, or anywhere exposed to dust and water.

Can this unit be mounted outdoors?

Yes. The IP65 rating means the enclosure is sealed against dust and low pressure water jets, so it can be fitted outside next to the charger or in a damp position where an IP40 unit would not be suitable.

What does PME fault detection actually do?

On a PME (TN-C-S) supply, a broken combined neutral and earth conductor in the network can raise the voltage on exposed metalwork, including a car plugged in outside. This unit monitors the supply voltage and, if it moves outside the 213V to 253V window for four seconds, disconnects the vehicle from the live conductors and from protective earth. It only recloses once the voltage is back within range.

Does this mean I do not need an earth rod?

BS 7671 Regulation 722.411.4.1 offers open-PEN detection as an alternative to an earth electrode for EV charging on a TN-C-S supply, and this unit provides that detection. Whether an electrode is required for a particular installation is a decision for the electrician designing it.

How does it differ from the GS8EV40PME?

The electrical specification is the same: 40A Type A RCBO, PME fault detection and surge protection across 8 ways. The GS8EV40PME is IP40 for indoor positions, while this unit is IP65 for outdoor and exposed ones, in a slightly wider enclosure at 231 x 238 x 118mm.

Is a Type A device enough for my charger?

A Type A RCBO detects AC and pulsating DC residual current. Smooth DC residual current is handled by the 6mA DC detection built into most current smart chargers, and where the charger provides that, a Type A device upstream is the appropriate choice. Where the charger does not, a Type B device is required instead.

Are there spare ways for other circuits?

No. The enclosure is 8 way and is supplied fully populated, with zero free ways. It is a dedicated EV charging supply unit rather than a board to extend.
