What we think

Doubling up the sockets is where the numbers start to work on a commercial site. One installation, one payment terminal and one cable run covers two bays, which usually beats installing two single chargers on both cost and disruption.

Two charging points for £17 a month works out at £8.50 each, against £10 a month for a single socket unit — so the more bays you run, the less each one costs you. With card payment built in, 4G included and PEN protection on board, it is an easy specification for car parks and hotels that want charging to pay for itself.

Can both sockets be used at the same time?

Yes, that is the reason to buy the Pay2 rather than two single units. Both Type 2 sockets serve their bays together, at up to 22kW each, and both appear as separate connectors over OCPP 1.6 so sessions are recorded individually. What each car actually draws depends on the supply feeding the unit and on the vehicle's own onboard charger, so size the incoming capacity for two bays at design stage.

How does a driver pay?

They plug in their own Type 2 cable and tap a card on the VPOS Touch terminal built into the unit. No app, no account and no membership, which matters on car parks, hotels and retail sites where most drivers are there once. Debit and credit cards, digital wallets, prepaid and NFC are accepted.

What does it cost to run per bay?

The quoted service fee for the Pay2 is 17 pounds a month, covering the payment terminal and two OCPP connectors. Spread across two charging points that works out at 8.50 a month each, against 10 pounds a month for the single socket EV Meter Pay, so the per-bay cost falls as you add sockets. Nayax handles the billing and clearing behind the transactions.

Does it need a three-phase supply?

For the full 22kW at each socket, yes, since that is 3 x 32A. The unit will also run on single phase at a lower output, so a site without three-phase can still use it, just with slower charging at each bay.

Are charging cables included?

No. Both sockets are untethered and drivers bring their own Type 2 cable. That is standard for public and pay-per-use sites because it suits every vehicle and leaves no cables on the unit to be damaged or taken.

Is there grant funding for this?

Businesses, charities and public sector organisations can apply to the Workplace Charging Scheme, which covers up to 75% of purchase and installation costs, capped at 500 pounds per socket and 40 sockets per applicant. A dual socket unit like the Pay2 counts as two sockets. Funding is confirmed to 31 March 2027.
