What is the difference between single and dual socket chargers?

A single socket charger has one charging point and charges one vehicle at a time. A dual socket charger has two charging points and can charge two vehicles simultaneously — either splitting the 22kW power between both sockets or delivering full power to one while the other waits, depending on the model. Dual socket chargers are more cost-effective per charging point for businesses installing multiple charge bays, as you need fewer electrical connections and less infrastructure. Do 22kW chargers need three-phase power?

Yes — 22kW EV chargers require a three-phase electricity supply. Most commercial premises, offices and industrial units already have three-phase power. If you are unsure whether your site has three-phase, your electrician or installer can check. If your site only has a single-phase supply, you are limited to 7kW charging — see our 7kW charger range. A 22kW charger adds roughly 75–90 miles of range per hour, depending on the vehicle. Most electric cars with a 60kWh battery will charge from 20% to 80% in around 2–3 hours on a 22kW 3 phase charger — compared to 6–8 hours on a 7kW home unit. However, not all EVs can accept the full 22kW — some vehicles have an onboard AC charger limited to 7kW or 11kW, meaning they will charge at their vehicle's maximum rate regardless of the charger's output.
