Why choose a dual socket EV charger?
On any commercial installation, the expensive parts are the groundworks, the cable run and the electrical connection — not the charger. Those costs are incurred per location, not per socket. A dual socket unit serves two bays from one of each, which is why it typically costs more than two single chargers in hardware and less than two single chargers installed. On any site with more than two bays, it is worth pricing both ways before deciding.
Do both sockets deliver full power at once?
It depends on the model and how it is configured. Some units split the available power between the two sockets when both are in use — so two vehicles each charge at roughly half the rated output. Others deliver full power to one socket and manage the second dynamically. Neither is wrong; what matters is matching it to how your site is used. Where vehicles are parked for hours, shared power across two bays serves more drivers per day than full power to one.
How much does a dual socket charger cost?
Prices start at £600 for the EVEC EDC01 PowerPair 7kW tethered, £1,070 for the EVEC VECSPRINT EDW01 7.4kW and £1,320 for the EDW02 22kW. The VCHRGD TwentyTwo 22kW is £1,550, the Rolec Zura dual socket from £1,390, and the Ratio io7 and io8 ranges from £2,300 with a choice of CT or MID metering. For pay-per-use sites, the Nayax EV Meter Pay2 at £2,140 includes a contactless payment terminal for both sockets. All prices include free UK delivery.
Does a dual socket charger count as two sockets for the grant?
Yes — and this is where the value really shows. The Workplace Charging Scheme pays up to £350 per socket, capped at 40 sockets, so a single dual socket unit can attract up to £700 of grant. Twenty dual socket chargers reach the cap and a maximum of £14,000. Combined with the halved installation cost per bay, that is usually what makes dual the right specification on a multi-bay site.
Will my supply carry a dual socket charger?
A dual 22kW unit can draw up to 44kW with both sockets in use, which is a substantial load. Load management is what makes it workable: it monitors the site's total draw and reduces charger output when the building needs power, so the main fuse is never at risk and charging simply takes longer at busy times. In practice it allows far more charge points than raw headroom suggests, and it is dramatically cheaper than a supply upgrade. Read our guide to DNO applications.
Can I bill drivers on a dual socket charger?
Yes, provided the unit has MID-certified metering — which is what makes a kWh reading legally billable in the UK, and cannot be added after purchase. The Ratio io7 and io8 MID models include it, as does the NexBlue Delta Max. For public sites, the Nayax EV Meter Pay2 combines two 22kW sockets with a contactless terminal in one unit.
