Three situations. When bays are physically separated — a dual unit only helps if the two bays are adjacent, and running a spur to a distant second bay defeats the point. When demand is unproven and you want to start small and expand, in which case laying containment for the next phase now is the sensible hedge. And when the available supply genuinely will not carry more, though load management often changes that answer.
How much does a 22kW single socket charger cost?
The Rolec EVO at £469 is the most affordable and one of the best value 22kW units on the UK market. Single or dual socket?
Compare on cost per bay installed, not on hardware price. A dual socket unit serves two adjacent bays from one cable run, one excavation and one connection, so it is usually cheaper per charging point than two single units even though the box costs more. It also attracts double the grant — up to £700 rather than £350. Do I need three-phase power?
Yes — 22kW charging requires a three-phase supply. Most commercial premises have one; most domestic properties do not. A 22kW charger fitted to single phase will work, but it will deliver 7.4kW, which means you have bought a 22kW unit and installed a 7kW charge point. Check the supply before specifying. Are these chargers grant eligible?
Yes — 22kW commercial chargers qualify under the Workplace Charging Scheme, worth up to £350 per socket and capped at 40 sockets per applicant, for businesses, charities and public sector organisations installing chargers for staff and fleet. The grant covers 75% of the total purchase and installation cost up to that cap, and is claimed by your OZEV-authorised installer rather than by you.
Tethered or untethered?
On a commercial site, untethered is almost always right. Drivers bring their own cable, so the unit suits any vehicle, there is nothing hanging off it to be damaged or stolen, and the charger stays tidy in a public setting.
