Do I need to buy a charging cable?
Only if your charger is untethered. An untethered (socketed) charger has a Type 2 socket on the unit and you supply the cable — that is the trade-off for the flexibility of being able to change cable length, or run two different EVs from one charger. A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached, so nothing extra is needed. Most public and workplace charge points are untethered too, which is why many drivers keep a cable in the boot even if their home charger is tethered. See our untethered charger range.
What length charging cable do I need?
Measure from where the charger is fitted to where the car's charging port sits when parked — not to the car itself. The port may be at the front, rear or on the far side, which can add several metres to what looks like a short run. 5m covers most domestic driveways where the car parks directly in front of the charger. 7.5m or 10m is the safer choice if you park at an angle, reverse in and out on different days, or use public charge points where bay layouts vary. What is the difference between a 7kW and a 22kW charging cable?
The rating has to match the supply, not the car. A 7kW cable (230V 32A single phase) is correct for home charging on a standard UK domestic supply and starts at £105. A 22kW cable (380V 32A three phase) is needed to charge at full speed from a three-phase charger — typically at workplaces and public sites — and starts at £145. A 22kW cable will also work perfectly well on a 7kW charger, so if you charge away from home regularly, buying the 22kW cable once avoids carrying two. It is heavier, which is the only real downside.
Should I choose a straight or coiled cable?
A coiled cable retracts on itself, so it stays off the ground and stores far more compactly — useful if the cable lives in the boot or the charger sits close to the car. A straight cable is lighter for the same rating, easier to handle in cold weather when coiled cable stiffens, and reaches its full stated length without tension pulling at the connector. For a cable plugged in and out every day at home, most people prefer straight; for one that has to be tidied away each time or carried in the car, coiled earns its place.
How do I stop the cable getting damaged?
Keep it off the ground. A cable coiled on a driveway sits in standing water, gets driven over and eventually damages the connector — which is the expensive part. A wall-mounted holder or U-hook from £38 solves this for less than the cost of one replacement cable, and keeps the plug end protected between charges. Are all Type 2 cables the same?
The connector is standard — Type 2 (Mode 3) is the UK and European norm, and any Type 2 cable will physically fit any Type 2 socket. What varies is the current rating, the number of phases, the cable's build quality and the flexibility of the sheath in cold weather. A cable rated below your charger simply charges more slowly; it will not damage anything, but you lose the speed you paid for. Match the rating to your charger and buy the length you actually need rather than the shortest option.
