Key takeaway: Every current UK BYD uses a Type 2 connector and accepts up to 11kW AC, but on a single-phase UK home any charger runs at about 7kW. The big BYDs have large batteries, so a 7kW charger takes around 13 hours to fill a Sealion 7 or Seal from empty. Their charge port is on the right-hand side, so cable length matters. Our top pick is the Ohme Home Pro with the 8m cable.

BYD has grown fast in the UK. In September 2026 it was the country's second-largest new car brand, with the Sealion 7 and Seal both in the month's top five battery-electric models. If you have just bought one, the next step is a home charger.

This guide covers how fast each BYD charges at home, why cable length is worth thinking about with these cars, and which charger suits which driver.

BYD models and home charging speeds

All of BYD's current UK models accept up to 11kW AC, which only matters on a three-phase supply. On a normal single-phase home supply, a 7kW home charger is the right choice.

Model Battery 0–100% on 7.4kW (single-phase) 0–100% on 11kW (three-phase)
BYD Sealion 7 (Comfort, Design) 82.5kWh ~13h 15m ~9h
BYD Sealion 7 (Excellence) 91.3kWh ~14h 45m* ~10h*
BYD Seal 82.5kWh ~13h 15m ~9h
BYD Atto 3 60.5kWh usable ~9h 45m ~6h 30m
BYD Atto 2 (Boost / Comfort) 51.1kWh / 64.8kWh ~8h / ~10h 30m* ~5h 30m / ~7h*

*Our estimate from battery size. Other figures are EV Database estimates. Real-world times vary with temperature and battery condition.

Large batteries mean a full charge from empty takes most of a night, but that rarely matters in practice. Most drivers plug in at 30–40% and top up to 80–90%, which a 7kW charger comfortably manages in a typical off-peak window.

Do not pay extra for 22kW. BYD's on-board chargers top out at 11kW, so a 22kW unit is no faster even on three-phase. On single-phase, every charger runs at about 7kW.

Why cable length matters for BYD owners

BYD puts the charge port on the right-hand side: at the rear on the Sealion 7 and Seal, and at the front on the Atto 3. If your charger is on the left of the drive, or you sometimes park nose-in and sometimes reverse in, a standard 5m cable can come up short.

Two easy fixes:

Choose a longer tethered cable. The Ohme Home Pro comes with a 5m or 8m cable, and the VCHRGD Seven Pro and NexBlue Point 2 tethered versions come with 7.5m.
Go untethered. A socketed charger lets you use any length of Type 2 cable, and swap it if you change car.

Installation and grants

A home charger must be fitted by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT. Our EV charger installation guide covers the process and typical costs.

The EV Chargepoint Grant covers 75% of the cost of the charger and installation, up to £500 per socket, for renters, flat owners and landlords only.

BYD home charging questions

What is the best home charger for a BYD?

For most UK BYD owners the Ohme Home Pro is the best all-round choice, with native Octopus Intelligent Go integration and an 8m cable option. The VCHRGD Seven Pro tethered, with a 7.5m cable, is the best-value option, and the myenergi Zappi is best for homes with solar panels.

How long does a BYD Sealion 7 take to charge at home?

The 82.5kWh BYD Sealion 7 takes around 13 hours 15 minutes from 0 to 100% on a 7.4kW home charger, or around 9 hours on an 11kW three-phase charger. Topping up from 30% overnight is much quicker.

Do BYD cars use a Type 2 connector?

Yes. BYD models sold in the UK, including the Sealion 7, Seal, Atto 3 and Atto 2, use a Type 2 inlet for AC home charging, so any UK Type 2 home charger is compatible.

Do I need an 11kW charger for my BYD?

Only if your home has a three-phase supply. BYD's current UK models accept up to 11kW AC, but almost all UK homes are single-phase, which limits any home charger to about 7kW. See 7kW vs 22kW EV chargers.

Which cable length do I need for a BYD?

The Sealion 7 and Seal have their charge port at the rear on the right-hand side, and the Atto 3 at the front on the right. If your charger will be on the opposite side of the car, or you sometimes park nose-in and sometimes reverse in, choose a longer cable such as the 8m Ohme Home Pro or the 7.5m VCHRGD Seven Pro.

Can I get a grant for a BYD home charger?

Only if you rent, own a flat or are a residential landlord. Since 1 April 2026 the EV Chargepoint Grant covers 75% of the cost of the charger and installation, up to £500 per socket. Owner-occupiers of houses are not eligible. See our 2026 grants guide.
